Serve With Us Beyond the Sidewalk
Help improve encampment conditions, distribute essential supplies, and build meaningful connections with neighbors experiencing homelessness in Kansas City.
Help Restore Spaces. Support Our Neighbors.
Street Support KC’s Encampment Outreach & Cleanup Program brings volunteers together to help improve conditions in outdoor encampments while building relationships with people experiencing homelessness.
Through monthly volunteer cleanups in partnership with local agencies and outreach partners, we help remove trash and debris, distribute essential supplies, and connect neighbors living in encampments with compassionate support and resources.
This is about more than cleanup — it’s about dignity, service, and showing up for our community.
What Volunteers Do
Volunteers may help with:
Removing trash and debris from encampment areas
Distributing hygiene kits, snacks, clothing, and supplies
Supporting light outreach and relationship-building
Assisting with camp beautification and environmental stewardship
Helping connect people to available community resources
Volunteer Commitment
Approximately 2 hours per event
Small volunteer teams (typically 7–10 people)
Monthly opportunities
First-time volunteers welcome
Safety Comes First
Volunteer safety is a top priority.
All cleanup locations are coordinated in partnership with city and community partners and are vetted in advance. Volunteers receive guidance before each event and are provided direction on safety protocols, protective equipment, and cleanup procedures.
Typical volunteer gear may include:
Gloves and grabber tools
Trash bags and cleanup supplies
Protective masks (when appropriate)
Long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes or boots
No prior experience is needed — just a willingness to serve.
Why This Work Matters
Encampments often face significant sanitation challenges, and cleanup support can improve health, safety, and dignity for people living there and surrounding neighborhoods.
At the same time, these events allow us to bring direct support to people who may not otherwise connect with traditional services.
It’s practical help and compassionate outreach — together.
